Ocean’s Depth

The ocean’s silence brings my soul to rest
Its deepest darkness filled with ancient pain
With language music in the darkest breasts
Of songs that may be never sung again.

What there is lost within the dying tide?
The songs of whales, the ringing of the waves.
The green on which our bodies live and die,
The death of what we’re far too late to save.

It all began there in the darkening deep.
It all will end there buried in the sand.
Our ancient lives will rot and die and sleep,
Destroy the footprints where we walked on land.

Is there no savior for the deepest dark?
Our first beginnings fade and leave no mark.
