Can you never participate in hard sports if your on coumadin?
Q:My son has BAV with trivial narrowing at this point however if it gets to a point where its severe narrowing or leaking he will have to have a valve replacement, and hes only 14 months. I wonder if he has this surgery will he be put on coumadin and why cant they participate in contact sports?

Please read the information and testimonials on my page for your son’s sake.It may help him. Simply because a small cut will make him bleed like a stuck pig in a slaughter house.
Coumadin is an anticoagulant. In contact sports there is always a chance of an injury that could cause bleeding and to a person taking blood thinners, any bleeding can be extremely dangerous, possibly fatal as the blood will never clot and the wound will never stop bleeding.Wait a sec. Did you say he was 14 months? What sort of contact sport were you considering? Baby wrestling??
Coumadin is a blood thinner. If you participate in contact sports you will inevitably get hit, trip and fall, etc.. You bleed in to that muscle, joint, space, etc… when you are on blood thinners such as coumadin. This can cause massive problems such as compartment syndrome, etc…That is why they can not participate… Coumadin is a blood thinner. The worry is that if something makes your son bleed, it may take longer than normal to stop it. (Of course, hemophiliacs have the same worries plus others.)Hopefully he will not have to be on Coumadin very long, but until then, follow your doctor’s advice and avoid anything that could cause him to bleed or bruise.
It is a blood thinner to protect against clots. Dont worry though, the coumidin will not be forever, usually it is a 6 month regimen. Because coumidin thins the blood, you can blled to death very easily if you substain a heavy bruise.
