Events that Happen In 1957 the Year I Was Born

As I surf the web I was surprised to see all the events that happened the year I was born. I feel that this piece of history interest me the most. Growing up in Detroit and going to school with people of another color I was amazed to see that in September of 1957 Little Rock, Arkansas became the first state to desegregate their schools, I knew that this happen but never really read the details of it. In this day and age we have all changed and it’s nice to know that all black students are able to attend school now without having to have the President call out the National Guard.

Science and Technology the Soviet Union mark the beginning of the space race by putting the first artificial satellite into space and the a month later the space ship Sputnik II carried the first living being a dog” into space, making the United States and the Soviet Union on a mission to achieve the space milestone.

With the high prices we are paying now for gas and food I thought it would be fun to compare what the prices were in 1957.

Gas – 27 cents, Dozen of eggs – 82 cents, Milk – $100 a gallon, Bread – 19 cents, Postage Stamp – 3 cents, Min Wage was a dollar and the average cost for a home was twenty thousand dollars and the average income per family was $4494.00. Wow has things changed. That means that in 48 years the min wage has gone up maybe 8 cents in 47 years. That’s not good but there is some good news as of January 1-2006 they are going to raise the min wage to $7.25 per hour. That doesn’t sound like much but being in business that will bring your pay check up $290 per week for a 40 hr work week compared to the $206.00 you are making now. But with the high cost of everything else will it seem like your making more money.

The difference between writing this essay and some of the other essays is that this was more a history lesson, learning about the facts and different events that went on in my life the year I was born. I found myself looking up all types of events that went on that year and comparing them today’s world. We all took history and learned about the civil war and our presidents, which by the way D Eisenhower was the president the year I was born. This was a good way for me to keep searching for things I would normally never think about.
