Do I have the H1N1 virus? Will it kill me? How long for recovery?
Q: I’m a fifteen year old girl in Illinois. I am having symptoms similar to those experienced by people who had H1N1. I started not feeling so good on Monday, but it was only muscle and joint aches. Yesterday, just out of the blue, I got this really bad headache. I started having chills and my muscles and joints just hurt like nothing else. I took some generic night time medicine stuff and it knocked me out for a few hours. About an hour after I woke up it started all over again, only more mild. I am not having diarrhea, vomiting, or a sore throat. I am not having trouble breathing, and my chest and abdomen area don’t hurt or feel like there is pressure put on them. My stomach doesn’t hurt. I am having sort of a dry cough, but it’s not bad. My body temperature ranges from 99.5 – 100 degrees. The headache went away for the most part, but it comes and goes. It hurts most when I look at bright things and when I look up. I don’t take any regular medications and I don’t have a chronic illness. I sometimes have chills and sometimes start sweating. Could it just be the seasonal flu? Or a cold? Could it be severe PMS, because I’m also having tenderness in my breasts and I am supposed to start my period this weekend? If it is H1N1, how long does it last for? How should I treat it? Will it kill me? Will it kill me suddenly? I have been researching this subject and and my mind is still not at ease. Please, someone help me. I don’t want to die.The hospital around here isn’t letting people under 18 in. I went there this weekend to see my grandma and they wouldn’t let me in.If anyone who had it could tell me more about it, I’d be very grateful. What can I do to make myself feel better? My temp is going down, 98.8 degrees.
A: Chances are you’ve got the flu, or at least some form of infection. However, there are some things you need to keep in mind:- there is not much of a difference difference between swine flu and seasonal flu. Swine flu generally brings on slightly more severe symptoms, and is more easily transmitted, however all of these things depend on the individual- the chances of you dying from swine flu are virtually nil, you’re more likely to die in a road accident on the way to hospital. People do die from swine flu, just like they do from the normal flu, but these tend to be elderly patients with underlying conditions. You certainly won’t die suddenly from it.- if you do have it, your experience with swine flu will be little different to your experience with seasonal flu (takes about a week to fully settle in, then up to a week from that to recover)- there are some drugs available to treat all strains of flu, however these are only available from your doctor, and generally only reduce its duration by a couple of days. The best methods are to take cold/flu medication to relieve the symptoms and have plenty of rest- don’t trust most of what you read on the internet, a lot is incorrect. The best thing to do is to see a doctor, and if you have to pay to set your mind at ease, it may be worth itOther than that, just relax, nothing bad will happen. If you start to get serious symptoms go straight to a hospital, but otherwise just expect this to be like any other flu.
