5 Important Things to Know About Trail Running

Trail running is a fun way to get into shape. Many people who enjoy trail running will tell you it’s not as boring as running on a treadmill, sidewalk or street. Sounds great, right? Well, trail running is great, but there are some important things to know before you do it.

Trail Running is Rough and Dirty

Before you hit the trails, keep in mind that this is nothing like running in a cozy gym or on a straight, flat slab of concrete. You’re going to get dirty. Your shoes will be covered in dirt and/or mud by the end of your run. You’re going to be covered in sweat and probably a little dirt, too, and don’t be surprised if a few bugs get on you, either. Remember, you’re going out into nature, so be prepared for this mentally.

Trail Running is More Challenging

Running on a trail in the wilderness is a lot harder than running on a treadmill or a paved surface. You’re going to be going up and down steep slopes, taking sharp turns, and running over all sorts of bumps and rocks. The positive aspect of this is that your muscles will get a better workout, especially your calves which will be used for the extra balance required. The downside is that you can easily twist your ankle or injure yourself in another way, so be careful.

Don’t Overdo It

As I just mentioned, trail running is a lot tougher on your muscles than other types of running, so it’s easy to overdo it, especially your first time. Before you decide you’re going to do an hour of trail running, you should go out and try it for 20 minutes or so a few times and see how you feel afterwards.

Trail Shoes Are Different Than Running Shoes

Sure, you can go trail running in a pair of cross trainers if you want, but I don’t recommend it. Trail shoes are made differently than other types of running shoes – they’re made for running on trails. They have different soles and are made out of different materials. Think of it like this: If you were going to play soccer, you’d wear cleats, right? Right. So, if you’re going to take up trail running, get some trail shoes.

Be Prepared

Aside from being mentally prepared for what you’re getting into and having the right shoes, there are some other things you want to bring with. First, bring plenty of water. You’re not going to be near any sinks or water fountains, so the last thing you want is to run out of water. Second, it’s probably a good idea to wear or bring some sunscreen. Third, I suggest bringing along some bug spray. You might not need it, but you never know. Lastly, and I know this may sound silly, but you should bring a compass or anything you can use to find your way back in case you get
