A young girl who likes to make stuff is often unable to create really impressive things for her bedroom. She might be able to make a doorknob hanger, complete with a message to others, or glue some rhinestones on a picture to jazz it up a little bit. But when it comes to really remarkable things, like drapes, rugs, or pillows, most young girls don’t have the ability to create them. That’s why your little girl will especially appreciate a project where she can easily make pillows for her bed. Candy pillows can be made without sewing, and each one takes only a few minutes to craft.
The fabric you choose for a candy pillow is key. Think of candies you’ve seen, then look for cloth that looks similar. Some good choices include red, red and white striped, green and white striped, swirled fabric, and even butterscotch-colored cloth. Choose material that is of medium weight and not stretchy.
Make one type of candy pillow by starting with a round foam piece that’s flat on the front and back. Lay down a piece of fabric, which is wider than the foam piece, and place it so the wrong side is facing upwards. Lay the foam in the middle of it. Take the top edge of the material and fold it over the top of the foam, and all the way to the edge. Then, take the bottom edge of the cloth and fold it over the top so that it well overlaps the first fabric piece. Twist the ends of the cloth and wrap a rubber band around each one. Tie a ribbon around each rubber band.
Make a different type of candy pillow by starting with a cylinder-shaped foam piece. As with the pillow above, lay it on the fabric, fold the cloth over it, then rubber band the ends. Tie the chosen ribbons around the ends.
Since a young girl doesn’t have to sew, and there are lots of different fabric choices that can be made, she can create any number of candy pieces and each one can look different. But there’s no reason to stop at that. Mom, sis, and others can also make the cool pillows, and lay them on beds, or toss them on couches and chairs. You can even make some for a breakfast nook. They’re adorable, colorful, easy to make, and fun to have around the house.
