Sew a homemade casserole carrier from a piece 1 yard heavy fabric, 45-inch fabric. Heavy fabrics include denim and canvas. Add handles to create an easy to carry casserole dish to family gatherings, picnics or other special occasions.

2, 5/8-inch dowels cut to 13-inches each
5-inch strip of hook and eyes
Instructions:
Step 1 – Measure and cut one 14-by-28-inch and one 10 ½-by-36-inch rectangle from the fabric.
Step 2 – Fold each edge in ¼-inch and pin. Press along the folded edges. Sew a straight seam down the middle of the ¼-inch strip.
Step 3 – Fold each edge in again ¼-inch and pin. Press along the folded edges. Sew a straight seam down the middle of the ¼-inch strip.
Step 4 – Fold the two 13inch edges down 1 ¼-inch and pin. Line the right edge of the pressure foot up with the sewn edge. Sew a straight seam along the edge to secure. These two areas create the casing for the dowels.
Step 5 – Slide a 13-inch dowel into each casing.
Step 6 – Place the fabric with the dowels on a flat surface so the dowels are on the top and bottom edge. Center the 9 ½-by 35-inch strip over the fabric with the dowels. Pin the overlapped center into place to form a 9 ½-by-13 inch rectangle.
Step 7 – Sew the two layers of fabric together. Line the pressure foot up with the edge and sew a straight seam around the overlapped areas. Move the pressure foot and line the right edge of the pressure foot up with the newly completed seam. Sew a second straight seam around the overlapped area.
Step 8 – Place the sewn casserole carrier on the table so the seams are showing and the dowels are on the top and bottom edges. Center and pin one side of the hook and eye strip on the left hand edge of the casserole carrier. Fold the right hand flap toward the center. Center and pin the opposite side of the hook and eye strip on the right hand edge of the casserole carrier.
Step 9 – Sew the two hook and eye strips in place.
Place the casserole dish on the center of the casserole carrier. Fold the right flap in, then the left. Hook the hook and eyes. Fold the top and bottom strip together and match the dowels. Pick up the casserole carrier by the dowels.
