Award Shows

September 18, 2011

Big show was on last Sunday. Surely you heard.

The 2011 Emmy Awards were Sunday night. And I don’t know if it’s just me or not, but I just do not care anymore. Truth be told, I haven’t cared for about 10 years now. And that’s sad. With that in mind I decided to find out why.

It’s not that I don’t have the time, because I do. There is nothing better on to watch. I really don’t watch that much television anymore. We were at one time very close companions. So that’s not the problem. I didn’t have any other plans at the time the Emmys were slated to begin. Although, if one wants, one can spend all day sitting in front of the tube watching the stars as they traverse their way down the red carpet. Yea….. No thanks.

Growing up in my household meant many things, but some of my fondest memories are of my mother and me (no father in the picture) eagerly awaiting the Emmys, or the Oscars, and of course the Academy Awards. I can still see us with bowls of popcorn in our laps, awaiting the inevitable drum roll, and the cameras to roll. And then viola, for the next three or four hours I was able to cast aside the tribulations of adolescence.

I’ve been going through a phase the past month or so, where I find myself reminiscing about my childhood. To a time where yes, there was the usual angst all adolescents go through, but life was just simpler. Now we all look back to our past from time to time. I realize this. What I experiencing was more than that.

And then, while trying to get excited about watching the Emmys, it dawned on me. I didn’t care because there is no more anticipation, no more build up. Bear with me a moment.

We now live in a society, where at any given moment, from even the most remote locations; we have access to information, virtually at our fingertips. I can even watch almost any award show as it is happening! Is it too much?

We are bombarded weeks in advance with all the hype the producers and sponsors can muster to throw at us. And we also have no less than seven “major” award shows throughout the year. And as technology advances, the more categories of award are created, thus creating more awards to hand out, and in turn, creating longer shows, from which to garner bigger gains. That’s fine for those who have a vested interest in the show. Just not for me.

It seems anymore, that as soon as one show is over, another is soon beginning. And the one that just ended? We hear about that show weeks after the last award was presented. I’m sorry, that’s just too much. Maybe I’ll just look up the winners on my phone.
