Spending an Irish Night in Knoxville

Whether you’re Irish or not, just about anyone who likes a cold pint will enjoy St. Patrick’s Day. Knoxville happens to be home to several great Irish Bars, so if you’re in town on March 17th and you’re looking for a good time, then look no further.
The Roaming Gnome – Downtown/Maryville/Sevierville
Affectionately called “The Gnome” by regulars, the Roaming Gnome has locations in Knoxville, Sevierville, and Maryville. Their menu may not be as “authentic” as some Irish places, but it doesn’t lack in deliciousness. The fish and chips are one of the highlights of the Gnome’s menu, but if you’re up for a challenge you may want to give The Challenger burger a try. The Challenger is a triple-stacked, bacon topped, cheese smothered burger that comes with a whole pound of fries. This thing will set you back $20, but if you finish it, then it’s on the house!
The best part about the Gnome is the friendly, lively atmosphere. The downtown Gnome tends to draw a slightly younger crowd thanks to its close proximity to the University of Tennessee, but all three locations have their own advantages. This year, Nashville’s Joe The Show Band will be heading up the entertainment downtown while Maryville’s own John Titlow Band rocks their hometown location. Get to the Gnome by 9 to enjoy their daily “Power Hour” with $1 drinks until 10pm.
The Irish Times Pub – Turkey Creek
If you happen to be on the West side of town, then Irish Times is your best bet. Their menu boasts dozens of very authentic Irish favorites like Cottage Pie, Bangers and Mash, and my favorite, the Traditional Irish Breakfast. With an excellent beer selection and comfortable, non-smoking atmosphere, Irish Times is family-friendly enough to bring your kids, but fun enough to let loose from time to time.
As with any good Irish spot, they will be offering live music to their St. Patty’s Day guests with cover bands like the Pop RoX and the Shoe Shakerz. Irish Times has great, friendly service and high-quality food, and it’s family owned. If you’re not looking to make it all the way downtown or to the Old City, then Irish Times would be a great spot to spend the holiday.
Boyd’s Jig and Reel – The Old City
Okay, I have to admit, this one is not actually Irish; it’s Scottish. Either way, Jig and Reel does have a bit of Irish influence in their offerings. From the Ploughman’s Lunch to the Fish-N-Chips, their menu would make any good Irishman (or Scotsman) come back for more. Being located in the historic Old City district is also a big plus as there are several great bars within walking distance. Jig and Reel also has an excellent selection of Scotch and Irish Whiskeys as well as imported drafts from across the pond.
Whether you choose the authentic and slightly low-key atmosphere at Irish Times, the Scotch-Irish flavors at the Jig and Reel, or the ever-lively Roaming Gnome, you really can’t go wrong. Since it’s a night for revelry, why not make a pub crawl and try all three?
Always remember to drink responsibly and choose a designated driver or use one of Knoxville’s cab services.
