Learning to Love Your Old Radiator

Do you own an older home? If so, you probably have a love-hate relationship with your old radiator. We love them because they keep us warm. We hate them because of how they look. Take heart; here are three terrific ways you can learn to love that old radiator.

Furnace Friendly Furniture

When hot air comes rising up through your furnace, it has to go somewhere and that’s why you’re stuck with a big, clunky chunk of metal in your room. However, you can make it homeowner-friendly with strategically-placed pieces of furniture to disguise its presence in the room. If you have a low-lying radiator, look for a high bench seat that could sit neatly over the unit and still keep the airflow uninterrupted. If possible, paint the radiator the same color as the wood on the bench to help it blend in.

For a more substantial disguise on a larger unit, you gut the bottom and back of a freestanding hutch to sit over your radiator. Then replace the panels in the front doors with a wire mesh to allow air flow. With all of the other decor elements in and on the hutch, you won’t even notice it’s a radiator cover up.

Build It In

Many people opt to create a build-in solution for their heating element eyesore. However, proceed with caution. A cheap and shoddy radiator cover can look even worse than the old antique heater itself. But, if you take the time and effort to create a piece that incorporates craftsmanship and functionality, it’s a great way to make the radiator add to the room rather than detract.

One of the most popular cover ups is to build a bench seat over the unit. Using decorative molding, hardware and a plump seat cushion and you can actually make your piece a welcome addition to the room.

Let It Be

Sometimes the best way to make peace with something is to just let it be. When it comes to your radiator, you may have to compromise – but, you can still let it serve a purpose. The easiest way to work a radiator into your decor is to top it with a solid surface and let it double as a side table. A pretty slab of marble is perfect for this job and will help shift your eyes off the radiator.
