Volunteer Opportunities in NYC

If you are interested in serving your community then there are a lot of volunteer opportunities available to you especially if you live in the New York City area. As a volunteer you have a plethora of opportunities to do wonderful things in your community such as tutoring, distributing food and other necessities to people in your community, assisting organizations with administrative work, and many other opportunities.

Below is a list of two organizations with very good volunteer opportunities:

1) Reading Partners:

Reading partners is a non-profit organization which aims to assist low income elementary school student with improving reading and writing skills. The organization was founded in 1999 by Mary Wright Shaw, Molly McCrory and Jean Bacigalupi at Belle Haven Elementary School in Menlo Park, California. Currently the organization has locations in New York, Washington D.C, Bay Area, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. Reading Partners provides free individualized tutoring in reading and writing to students attending struggling elementary schools. As of 2011 the organization has begun assisting schools in the New York City area in the boroughs of the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. As a volunteer for this organization you could provide individualized tutoring to students in reading and writing which will in turn improve that student’s overall academic performance. To be a volunteer teaching experience isn’t necessary you could be a high-school student, college student, or even a parent. 2) New York City Rescue Mission (NYCRM)

The New York City Rescue Mission (NYCRM) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1872 which seeks to provide crisis intervention to people in New York City in the form of spiritual guidance, food, shelter, clothing, and educational programs. There are approximately 300 rescue missions similar to the NYCRM located throughout the United States. The NYCRM needs volunteers to assist with administrative duties, food preparation and distribution, tutoring and many other duties. As an administrative volunteer you could assist with processing the mail, marketing, or any other administrative task necessary to the function of the organization. As a food preparation volunteer you could assist with preparing meals and serving the program participants. As a tutor you could help the program participants study for the GED exam. Furthermore, as a tutor you could also provide ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction, basic computer literacy, vocational training, or any other type of instruction deemed essential for the program participants.
