A Birthday Gift from Soccer Legend Pele

“Enthusiasm is everything. It must be taut and vibrating like a guitar string.” ~ Pele

If there is one word I would use to describe Pele, it would be enthusiastic. Enthusiastic about his great love of “football” or soccer as we call it here in the US, but more than that, he is enthusiastic about life.

I was 27 years old as I stood outside the World Cup Stadium in Japan. It was 2002. Fans from around the world streamed through the gates and there I was, working in what was my dream job. I was working on MasterCard’s sponsorship of the 2002 World Cup.

I had lived in Japan 4 years before. I had taught English in a small village outside Tokyo. This was a totally different experience.

The next day was my 28th birthday. As I wrapped up my long day in the office, my dear friend called and asked me if I wanted to have dinner. I said yes, and agreed to meet her at The Four Seasons at 10 pm.

As I entered the room, there was only one table. It was made up of men and women, who were laughing and chatting, but it was clear that one man held the night in his hands, Pele. The football hero, the great lover and master of the beautiful game.

As the night wore on, it came up that it was my birthday. In all of his great enthusiasm Pele lit up like a birthday cake with all of my 28 candles on it. Before I knew it, there was a cake, singing and a special hug from this wonderfully kind soccer legend.

As I closed my eyes and made a wish, Pele clapped and sang next to me. Before I left, he and my friend had arranged to give me a signed ball saying “To Shannon, Happy Birthday. Pele”

As I floated back to my hotel that night, I knew it had been the most special of evenings. I now keep this wonderful piece in a display case in my office so that I can reflect back on that night and let the warmth and enthusiasm wash over me and remind me that no matter how old I am, or what year it is, my enthusiasm must vibrate within me like guitar string. And for this inspiration I have the legendary and lovely Pele to thank.
