The Lycanthropic Lark

The elderly Miss Gorgon brushed her grey hair away from her face and opened the door to find three kids in costumes yelling, “Trick or treat!” and anxiously awaiting their treats.

Miss Gorgon smiled, “What are your names?”

“Rich” The first youngster was dressed as a hobo.

“Tom.” The skeleton said; sounding most fearsome.

“Ken,” announced the super hero in a powerful voice.

“And what did you ask for?” She asked, winking her eye.

“Trick or treat!” They all repeated.

“Trick!” Miss Gorgon said as the kids’ faces dropped. “Open your bags”

She grinned mischievously as candies appeared out of nowhere and fell into their bags.

“How did you do that?” The delighted kids asked in unison.

“My trick. My secret,” purred Miss Gorgon.

“Do it again!” Resounded Rich and then the other two boys joined in, “Yeah, do it again! Please?”

“Sorry. Only one trick per treat.” She giggled softly.

“But there were three treats and only one trick.” Tom protested.

“Three bags, three treats, three tricks.” Miss Gorgon waved her hand in a final gesture.

“Awwww” the kids moaned, “Not fair!”

“Not fair? She asked with a twinkle in her eye.

The kids did not move.

“You want more?” She said, “Be careful what you ask for. Remember, it is Halloween!”

“More! More! More!” They chanted.

They watched and waited impatiently.

“Maybe she doesn’t know any more tricks.” said Ken.

“Don’t I?” She retorted.

The kids were about to turn and walk away when Rich pointed toward Miss Gorgon.

Miss Gorgon’s features were changing. They heard a deep throated growl.

“What the heck?” asked Rich as all three backed away; their smiles vanishing.

Wrinkled cheeks became smooth. Her smokey blue eyes flashed green, their pupils narrowed. Her forehead morphed slightly forward as did her nose and mouth. The mischievous grin was replaced with a toothy grimace. Her greying hair shortened; covering her smooth features.

As her face attained a wolfish appearance, the kids screamed and ran.

She chased them half way down the block and then morphed back into Miss Gorgon. While laughing heartily she called after them. “Remember. T’was you who asked for another trick!”
