5 Tips on Nailing Your Job Interview

So you have taken out the time to polish up your award worthy resume and cover letter. After submitting them, your efforts pay off and you get a call for an interview. You can literally feel your feet in the front door walking down the hall to your office with a magnificent view. Now all you have to do is beat out your competition to claim the job that was mean for you. Here are some tips to help you land the job of your dreams.

1. Find out as much information about your interviewing company that you can. You can review the company website to gain a wealth of knowledge, such as what all the company does, its objectives, and other noteworthy events or charities that it participates in. This is not only a great way to impress your interviewer with your knowledge of the company, but also a good way to find questions to ask the interviewer about how the company operates.

2. Practice makes perfect. Don’t leave anything to chance. Practice going over common and uncommon potential interview questions and answers. Also, review your resume and the qualifications and skills that are necessary for the job. If you have forgotten some information or skills, practice and read up on them before going to your interview.

3. Dress appropriately for your interview. Make your decision on what to wear based upon the type of business that you are interviewing at. You also might want to explore the company to see how its employees typically dress. Usually dress slacks, polo shirts, suits, dresses, skirts, blouses, and dress shoes are good ideas for interviews. Avoid wearing jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes, as they are too casual. In addition, don’t wear clothing that is too tight, too big, or too short.

4. Show up early for your interview. Arriving 15 to 30 minutes early should suffice. This will give you enough time to settle in to your surroundings, relax, and get in the right frame of mind for your interview.

5. Put your best foot forward during the interview. This means sitting appropriately, maintaining eye contact with your interviewer at all times, speaking clearly with self assurance, and answering all questions that you are asked with a smile. Thank your interviewer for the opportunity to speak with them at the conclusion of your interview.
