How to Create Fading Nail Polish Art

Polished nails can draw attention to your hands and be the finishing touch to your look. Instead of painting your nails one color, use multiple colors to create a fading effect. Your nails will look like a work of art for a fraction of the price you would pay to get a professional manicure.

Things you need:
Light and dark nail polish
Soap
Water
Nail polish remover
Top coat
Scrap paper
Makeup sponge
Cotton swabs
Top coat

Step 1: Choose two nail polish shades to create your fading nail polish art. You need a light or translucent polish and a dark nail polish.

Step 2: Wash your hands with mild soap and water. Swipe nail polish remover over the surface of your nails to remove old enamel.

Step 3: Protect your nails with a clear top coat.

Step 3: Paint your nails from the cuticles to the tips with the light-colored polish. Wait two minutes for the polish to dry. Apply a second coat of polish and let it dry.

Step 4: Tilt the darker nail polish bottle so the varnish slowly drips out of it. Catch three drops on a piece of scrap paper.

Step 5: Dip the border of a makeup sponge into the polish.

Step 6: Pat the sponge on the tips of your nails to distribute the nail polish. Gradually move toward the middle of your nail. Lighten the pressure of the patting motion as you get closer to the middle of the nails. The tips of your nails must be the darkest and the color must fade as you move down toward the cuticles.

Step 7: Use a cotton swab and nail polish remover to get rid of any nail polish mistakes.

Step 8: Sweep a translucent top coat over your nails to help blend the colors even more. Allow your nails at least 30 minutes to dry.

Tip: Instead of using a darker color, you can also use a glitter nail polish. Apply several layers of glitter on the tips of your nails and lessen the amount of glitter as you work toward the middle of your nails.
