Q: I use the term “family” loosely.O.K. I just need to vent and I’m sure other parents feel the same way I do so I’ll vent on your behalf:) I consider my self a pretty reasonable person/parent. I’m involved in my kids life, I drive them to all their activities, I read to them before bed at night and to a degree, I try to monitor their tv watching. Hey I’m not saying I stand over them 24/7 when the boob tube is on but I pretty much have an idea what’s on the TV when I’m upstairs folding laundry, making beds etc. and doing other mom housewife exciting stuff (you get the idea). Also, I have to preface this with I am not a fanatical Christian right (nor left. Hey, I’m a jew) but man those promos for the afromentioned show really get me up in arms. Here’s why…Well, I have to say that it was to my disgust, outrage, shock etc. that I came down to find the promos. for “Secret Life of the Amertican Teenager” while my 7 and 9 yo kids we’re innocently watching reruns of “Full House”. I feel like I was baited and switched as a parent. I think my kids are watching shows with good moral values (i.e don’t steal, don’t lie and the like) But really I should be afraid to walk away from the TV because what they are really learning is that Teenagers get pregnant and hide it from heir parents. What the @#$????? (fill in the blanks) what happened to the “Full House” they we’re watching? Parents be forewarned–do not leave the room when you’re kids are watching “ABC Family”. That is unless you are pretty cool with your kids even thinking for one second that being a pregnant 15 yo teenager is cool or acceptable in any way shape or form. Hey, that’s your call as a parent but I don’t nor will I ever accept this.OK, Let me gather my dignity and vent about how crazy inapproprotate this was. It made me sooo angry that I took the liberty of blocking this channel (I know BOLD is’nt it?). How dare they play it off that this is “family” programming when in essence you are subjucting my 9 and 7 yo to insane ideas of what is deemed acceptable behavior for a teenager.Need I say that Jamie Lynn Spears and Bristol Palin did what they did because this teen pregnenacy thing is normalized by the media. We are bombarded with images of unwed mothers we sure as heck don’t need this idea being reinfored and shoved down my kids throat when they are watching “family” programming (do you like the sarcastic qoutes).OK I”m a very angry mother who might need to get a life blogging about such things but I really found the need to get this one off my chest.Hey pass this one on and boycott ABC “Family”. A: I will start by saying that I have never watched this particular show. I will then say I completely agree with Marni. I have two girls, thankfully neither is quite old enough to get pregnant. One is very close though. I monitor what they watch and we talk about the shows we do watch. My oldest has already come to me with questions about sex b/c all her friends think they know what they are talking about. I absolutely will not let my child watch a show where teenagers get pregnant. It doesn’t matter. ABC family needs to accept that younger kids watch their channel. Have the commercials for the older kids shows on later. “Secret life” maybe dealing with how hard it is after you get pregnant, but shows like “Full House” and “The Huxtables” even, show how and why not to get that way in the first place. I’m not saying that this is a bad show or anything, but I feel that it makes people think “oh well people on TV got pregnant and turned out fine, so i’ll be fine too” But the real world doesn’t turn out that way…what do you think about these type of shows?

A: What are you talking about, “she turned out fine”? Amy’s constantly crying and stressing over what she should do with her baby, doesn’t seem fine to me.Actually, I think the show is showing how shitty things can get if you’re a pregnant teenager. But no, TV doesn’t justify reality. It’s scripted to turn out ok in movies like Juno. In real life it’s not that fun. I can’t even stand my 4 year old cousin for more than 10 minutes, I’d DIE with a newborn.

How Do You Feel About “Secret life of The American Teenager” Show?

Q: I’m really starting to be disappointed in this show especially with the new 2010 season. In the beginning when we find out that Amy is pregnant, everyone is shocked considering she is 16 and sex is mentioned but not often. Grace is this very contemporary girl who is a devoted christian and believe that sex should be within marriage. Majority of the other characters besides Adrian and Ricky do have sex but its not shocking.Now with this new season, sex is every other word and they make it seem like its an activity. They are making sex have this pointless meaning and just something do to. Everyone besides Amy, wants to have sex and they do not care who it really is. The producer of the show produced 7th heaven-a show a family could watch. This show is really only for adults and probably shouldn’t be shown on abc Family. What do yall think?No, its making every teenager think its okay to have sex with whom ever and to believe their are no consequences. It’s not attractive.It’s call the secret life of the american teenager ..not teenagers. Yes teens do have sex, but this show portrays that its okay to do it whenever and with anyone who wants to. Most teens who do have sex regret it later on in life. It seemed like the show would be about how difficult it is to be a teen mom and you should consider the consequences of having sex…but Amy still seems to have it easy.LunaKitty, I competely agree with you 100%. A: I agree, it is not even entertaining when every character has sex or wants to have sex with every other character. It was an interesting idea but it’s not even remotely realistic anymore. And the only word they ever say is ‘sex.’ My sister and I counted the number of times they said it in one episode and the result was 69. :PThe most frustrating thing is how they make it seem like EVERY teen is concerned with sex. Not everyone is like that. We know nothing about the characters other than their family lives and their sex lives : / And once Grace lost her virginity, they took away the role model she was, so there is no longer a lesson to learn from the show (yes, Amy got pregnant, but she had two guys after her! That doesn’t happen : / )
