A: These thoughts and feelings are very common, especially for your age group. There is nothing “wrong” with you and you are not a bad person for having these thoughts. It has crossed every ones mind from time to time. No one is immune to feelings of depression, hate, jealousy, and helplessness. If they are, then they aren’t human. Don’t let anyone tell you differently! Anyone who says you are wrong or a lost cause is just masking their own feeling of insecurity and doubt. And there is nothing wrong with being antisocial or shy, some people just are that way while others are naturally outgoing. But if you have had these feelings for three years you should probably see a professional. Most psychologists and counselors will see you on a sliding scale or for free. There is nothing wrong or shameful about seeing a therapist. You don’t even have to tell anyone you are going if you don’t want to, it is your choice. All they do is talk to you and ask you important meaningful questions in a safe and very private environment. They help you find the root cause of your depression. This may be a source of stress in your life or you may be suffering from a chemical imbalance in your brain that can be controlled with medication. If the cause of these feelings is stress then they help you identify it and find ways to relieve it, cope with it, or completely eliminate it. They are there to help you in ways no one else can even when you feel like no one will understand or be able to help. They may come off as cold, dry doctors in a stiff coat but really they care about you and want to reach out to you. They want to help people like you so badly that they have made it their profession and studied these subjects extensively. If it is a chemical imbalance rather than a source of stress, they can identify what the disorder may be and treat it with medication appropriately. These medications don’t make you a drone or a feeling less zombie, they also don’t make you 100% happy all the time (again, this would be inhuman). They just give you the chemical you need to have a well balanced mentality. Think of your brain as a cup, if you are lacking the chemical Lithium (because your body just doesn’t produce enough of it) then your cup is half empty. Taking a Lithium pill will fill your cup to the top where it should be, without over flowing it, giving you what nature wasn’t able to. If for whatever reason a doctor thinks you would benefit from medication, there are programs to help you pay for it or often times the state can give it to you for free. You also don’t have to be on medication for the rest of life, terrified of forgetting to take a pill. I was on medication for about three years before doctors weened me off and with a little help from a counselor I was able to function just fine without it and eventually without the help of a psychologist. They may even decide to hospitalize you if they feel it absolutely necessary (though this is rare). This isn’t like being locked up in some gothic insane asylum like so often depicted. It almost felt like a vacation for me. You get to lounge around, watch movies, read books, someone else cooks and cleans for you, and you get to meet and know people from all walks of life who have come to feel the way you do. All this while a team of professionals does everything they can to help you be the person you have always had in you, but was too plagued by depression to allow out.I saw a psychiatrist for many years after a failed suicide attempt when I was just 13 years old. After medication and counseling I still feel sad once in a while, but who doesn’t? Sadness is a natural and healthy reaction to something negative but severe depression and suicidal thoughts are crippling and destructive. They blind you to what is really going on. But now I can control those thoughts and emotions and I feel happy and content far more often than I feel sad. I don’t have sudden unprovoked mood swings any more.It is very important to have goals in life. Think of your niece and how horrible it would be to deprive her of her uncle who loves and adores her so much. Think of how much help you could give to her when she reaches your age and feels confusion and depression just like you do now. She wouldn’t have to be alone because she would always have such an understanding and supportive uncle to look after her and reach out to her. She needs you more than you know. It is also great that you want to be an architect engineer! It is a very rewarding field.Just remember that whatever is bothering you is not constant. Nothing in life is constant, everything is subject to change. Nothing can escape change. It is what makes life so surprising and beautiful. Whatever stress you feel right now won’t always be there, it can’t always be there. It is impossible. Whatever or who ever makes you feel bad right now won’t always be there or won’t always make you feel this way, it can’t.
