How Adopting a Cat Helped Me Heal

Midnight was abandoned in my backyard when she was only 7 weeks old. I was watering my tomatoes when I heard a high pitched meow. There hiding in the dead grass was a black kitten with piercing blue eyes. My neighbor told me that 2 kittens appeared out of no where 5 days ago. One of them died and he’s been feeding the surviving one but didn’t want to keep her. Without even thinking I said “she is mine.” I’ve only had her for 5 months but it has been the best 5 months of my life.

Midnight is the first pet I’ve ever owned so I’ve had a lot of learning to do. They say the first year of owning a pet is the most expensive. That’s no lie. First trip to the pet shop I must have spent $100 without blinking. That included food, bowls, a carrier, litter box, toys etc. Two weeks later I noticed that Midnight had developed an eye infection. The vet also found an upper respiratory infection. For the next three months Midnight was constantly on antibiotics. That’s $6 a week for medication plus $20 every 2 weeks in vet bills. But in the end, it all it was all worth it.

Before Midnight, I was constantly getting sick. I was nauseous all the time and having problems keeping food down. My doctor ran every test underneath the sun and couldn’t find a problem. Plus I was having a slew of family problems. The doctor’s guess was that I had too much stress. Not being able to find a diagnosis just led to more stress which then led to depression. Midnight changed that. She seemed to know whenever I was feeling down and would cuddle next to me. She would constantly crawl into my lap and “give me a bath.” As strange as it was, it felt good. This little animal is giving me unconditional love and showing me that I’m worth something to her. I’ve still been getting sick and my doctor still has not figured out what’s wrong but Midnight has shown that she’ll be here for me no matter what.
