Staying Healthy at Work

Sitting at a desk all day can lead to some unhealthy habits. But most of us don’t want to munch on celery sticks and do sitting jumping jacks all day. So what can you do to stay healthy at work without going to the extreme? As a desk job worker struggling with the fitness fight, I can help!

Get Up!
Staying healthy can be as easy as standing up. Try to stand up at least every hour if possible, or even more often if you can. Standing up and moving around a little will get the blood moving and remind your body it’s alive. This tiny thing can make a big difference. It keeps your circulation going, your heart working, your muscles awake and your body happier. So next time you’re holding on a phone call, have to get something that you could roll your chair to or just have a free minute, get up!

Weights
Try wearing ankle weights when you’re sitting at your desk. These weights can be found at most sporting goods and department stores. You can get a basic set for under $10. Strap them on your ankles and lift your legs slowly up in sets of five to 15 times. Get in the habit of putting them on when you sit down and keep your legs moving. This is great and simple exercise to do while sitting down.

The Food Situation
If you keep candy and other sweets at your desk, that’s what you’re going to eat. Try to keep healthier snacks around, like granola bars or protein shakes. You don’t need to starve yourself, just eat what’s right. Consider bringing in a healthy lunch from home rather than going out or hitting the vending machine. Another good habit is to keep a glass or bottle of water around. If you’re tempted to have a snack, try sipping some water instead. You may discover you weren’t hungry at all, just thirsty or bored. Plus, water is good for you!

Use Your Resources
Does your office have a large parking lot? Park toward the back and walk farther. How about an abandoned hallway? You can walk in the hall during your breaks. Your best resource, however, is your co-workers. Chances are that you are all facing the same struggle staying healthy. Working as a team can give you all some extra motivation. There are countless things you can do together. You can have a healthy potluck for lunch. How about a pre-work exercise group? You could even talk to your boss about creating a contest involving exercise or healthy lifestyles. Anything you can do to give each other extra motivation can help.

Staying healthy in a desk job isn’t easy. It’s simple to slip into unhealthy habits sitting at a desk all day. But by taking a couple of steps, you can start down the pathway to a more in-shape self. Don’t let an office life take over your body!
