ACT I
Scene 1
Dan is sitting at the table w/ his DBZ backpack in the corner beside him, currently his attention is locked on his new DBZ video game. The door opens & Tim walks in.
Dan Continues to play his video game as Tim stands at the door, waiting to be greeted by Dan who should consider himself graced by Tim’s Presence.
Tim
Aren’t you even going to say hello?
Dan
(Not even taking his eyes from the t.v. screen.) Hi.
Tim
Wow, it’s no wonder you don’t have any friends.
DAN
Ha, like what you have is friends.
Tim
Yes they are, they’re…
dan
Look, I’m trying to finish this level, it’s the hardest one in the game. If you want to talk, you’ll have to wait ’till I’m done.
Tim sets his backpack on the table.
Tim
Well I’m going to do my homework now. (small silence)
Dan
Cool
A small pause in dialogue.
Tim
I thought you were going to do your homework?
A beat
Without saying a WORD, TIM whirls his backpack onto the table, unzips it, and puts his homework out, and starts furiously starring at the pages of his textbook.
A small Silence as Dan plays his game, then the game announces “Winner!”, and dan puts away his 64 nicely. He then walks to his collection of videos and puts one in.
Dan
What’s you’re name anyway? (Beat), oh, o.k. whatever, my names Dan, if you wanted to know. (Beat), Have you ever heard of DBZ? (beat) Do you like japanease cartoons.
TIM
No, I don’t like whatever stupid thing you’re watching on t.v. Excuse me! I am trying to get my homework done for school. There was a lot of it today, and unlike some people I actually do my homework.
Dan
O.K. whatever, that’s fine. I’ll just keep the volume down then.
Dan puts in the video and adjusts the volume.
Dan Does his homework calmly and easily. As Dan is working on his homework, Tim begins watching the t.v. distracted from his homework. Sometime after Tim has gotten caught up in the suspense of the t.v. show Dan finishes his homework assignment, puts away his homework into his backpack, stops the tape and begins playing his ’64 game.
TIM
There’s no way you’re already done with that already.
dan
I got most of it done during school, during lunch.
TIM
That’s probably what you do because no one hangs out with you.
DAN
Or maybe I can get it done because I’m not worried about hanging out with anyone.
TIM
Well at least I don’t have to watch that stupid show anymore.
DAN
You were watching the show? I thought you didn’t like that kind of thing.
TIM
I wasn’t watching it, that’s not what I meant.
DAN
Than how much of your homework is done?
TIM
None of your business, I’m just reading some of the chapter anyway. The teacher said this was going to be a tough assignment.
DAN
That’s because Ms. Franklin’s an idiot, she just reads the textbook with us.
TIM
I don’t think you should talk about our teacher that way.
DAN
It’s just the truth, but whatever.
TIM
Jerk!
DAN
I’m just going to play my game. Good luck with your homework whatever your name is.
Scene 2
Dan is again sitting down playing DBZ on his ’64. Tim enters siletnly & puts his homework out. He sits intent on it Both sit quietly for a few minutes. Finally Dan turns off the ’64 and walks to his collection of dbz videos and manga’s.
TIM
Yeah I bet you have lots of homework today. You gonna watch that dumb show?
Dan turns off the T.V.
DAN
Actually, I’m already done.
TIM
Liar. There’s no way you have all of math done.
DAN
It’s just graphing.
Dan sits and begins drawing his favorite characters from the DBZ from the manga he pulled off the shelf.
tim
Good that means I don’t have to watch that stupid show anymore.
DAN
Nope, you don’t
TIM
Great
DAN
Right
TIM
Super
Both return to their respective tasks.
TIM
are you sure you don’t have any homework?
DAN
Yep.
Pause
DAN
Of course I could just get ahead in my classes.
TIM
That’s probably a good idea.
DAN
But I think I’d rather draw.
TIM
I think it might be better for you if you drew.
DAN
You do?
TIM
Umm… well, yes.
beat
TIM
… if you do, you could get done with all of your classes and have the rest of the year off.
DAN
Hmmm… maybe you’re right. I guess I’ll just get to work on next weeks assignment.
Dan gets out his textbook, and starts solving problems.
TIM
Aren’t you going to watch your show?
DAN
I didn’t want to bother you.
TIM
Oh. Well usually a nerdy show like that would bother me, but if you want to watch it, I can let you this time.
DAN
Well if you’re sure.
Dan gets to the DBZ videos and pulls out a video much farther from the video last time, puts it in & sits at the table.
DAN
I think this is where I left off last time.
TIM
No, no, they were fighting that Vegita guy…
Dan Smiles
TIM
err… Vegitables, orr was it geeko? I’m not really sure…
DAN
How did you know the characters name?
TIM
Look I don’t know what you’re trying to prove. I don’t watch your stupid show.
DAN
O.K. that’s fine, but I think I’ll just go back to that episode anyway.
Scene 3 Later at School
Timothy and Jeff are walking home from school.
JEFF
Hey, Tim. Walking home?
TIM
Yeah. What are you doing?
JEFF
Same.
TIM
I thought you had a car.
JEFF
I do.
TIM
Oh. OK.
JEFF
I’m getting some new decals put on it at the shop.
TIM
Oh.
Pause
Tim starts walking a little faster.
JEFF
You in a hurry?
Tim
Not really… just felt like picking up the pace a little.
JEFF
That’s weird.
TIM
Naw, haven’t you ever just felt like walking a little faster, just because?
JEFF
Nope.
Tim slows down.
TIM
Oh, ok. cool.
JEFF
Yeah, we’ve got plenty of time.
TIM
Yeah, I guess your right.
JEFF
Good, I was worried for a second, thought you might be acting a little weird.
Tim starts looking around casually, eventually Jeff picks up on this subconsciously and starts looking around as well.
JEFF
Look, there’s that anime kid.
TIM
What? Who’s that.
JEFF
Oh, come on. You have to have seen him sometime. He’s such a freak, he sticks out like a soar thumb.
TIM
I don’t remember hearing about a kid like that.
JEFF
(chuckles rudely at Dan)
Was he just waving at us? (chuckle). Oh Man, I think he’s coming this way! He’s totally a geek.
TIM
Yeah, I bet if we walk a little faster we can avoid him.
JEFF
Why would I want to avoid him. No I think I’m going to let him talk to me for a bit. I can let him have a few moments of my time. It’ll probably be the best few moments of his goddamn life.
Dan finally catches up to them.
JEFF
To Dan: What do you want?
DAN
What’s up Tim? You heading over to the shop?
A beat
JEFF
What are you talking about?
DAN
Oh, sorry. Were you guys talking?
JEFF
No, you can(chortle) you can totally talk to us. You’re way cool like us(trying to hide a smirk).
DAN
I wasn’t talking to you.
JEFF
Haha. Wait what?
DAN
Whatever. So you heading to the shop?
JEFF
I think the dweeb-worm is talking to YOU T. You gonna answer the maggot?
Dan rolls his eyes.
TIM
What did you want?
DAN
I just asked you.
TIM
Sorry. I don’t know what you’re talking about.
DAN
Are you going to the shop?
TIM
No, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why are you talking to me.
DAN
What are you talking about? We’re almost at the end of the arch, I can’t wait for you to see Freeza’s final form.
JEFF
Wait, wait wait, are you actually hanging out with this freak-O? (to Dan) You actually think he’s your friend.
DAN
Well, yeah. We’ve been hangin….
TIM
Don’t lie.
Dan, expression of confusion.
TIM
I don’t even know who you are. Why are you talking to me?
JEFF
Good good, I was worried about you for a second T. Get out of here freak! Go watch your stupid cartoons.
Dan looks at Tim, they have a moment of understanding.
DAN
Oh… right. I guess I don’t know you.
JEFF
Get out of here you idiot.
Jeff pushes Dan.
DAN
Don’t do that again.
JEFF
Why what’re you going to do.
Dan doesn’t say anything, merely taking a strong fighting stance.
JEFF
Oh, are you a karate kid? Freak, hit me why don’t you.
DAN
I gave you a warning and you have not violated it. I have no reason to strike you.
JEFF
You better get going before I give you a reason to.
Dan bows, and walks ahead of them.
JEFF
He’s such a freak.
DAN
yeah, a real, (losing the nerve to tell the whole lie) freak…
Scene 4 Back at the shop
DAN is watching playing 64. He is obviously upset. TIM enters.
TIM
Hi…
Dan does not reply
TIM
Sorry, I tried to walk faster so that we wouldn’t run into you.
DAN
Ha! You’re such a jerk.
A small pause
DAN
Look don’t talk to me for a bit.
TIM
I’m still your friend, you have to understand.
DAN
Look, I get it. You’re “one of the cool kids or whatever.” I just thought you were cooler than that.
TIM
I just want to be successful.
DAN
You mean you just want to be a leach. You’re such a blood sucking leach, no backbone and you’re always dependent on someone making the real decisions.
TIM
Would you calm down.
DAN
GET OUT! Leave me the fuck alone ass-hole!
Tim doesn’t move. Dan takes a deep breath.
DAN
Look, it’s not like I hate you. I just need some space for a bit, K? We’re still friends, but I’m really pissed right now. If you actually are my friend you’ll just not bug me right now.
TIM
What if I just sit over here in the…
DAN
No. I don’t want to fucking SEE you right now. Could you just go out of the door. GO to the front desk! Walk around outside! Just leave me the fuck alone!
Tim Exits Dan Keeps playing his game.
Scene 5
