How to Prepare for the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT)

Students in the Peach State cannot graduate unless they pass the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). Parents and students should use the resources provided by the Georgia Department of Education to adequately prepare for these Georgia graduation exams.

All students who entered high school in Georgia before July of 2011 will have to take the GHSGT exam to graduate. Thereafter, current state policy is that the graduation test will no longer be required of Georgia high school students. That means that most students still in high school now must take and pass the GHSGT to graduate. They must also pass the Georgia High School Writing Test. Note that the writing test is still going to be a requirement for Georgia graduation even when the GHSGT is totally phased out.

As with most graduation tests, Georgia has separate exams for English, math, science, and social studies. To prepare for the math test, the state has released some actual questions for the GHSGT math on its website. View the “GHSGT Resources” page and look for the “GHSGT Mathematics Released Items With Commentary” link. Use those after you have studied the GHSGT student guides for each subject.

On that same page, you may also find the math formula sheet helpful in preparing for the math portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests. Other resources accessible from that page include a Social Studies Content Description and a Mathematics Student Guide. The other resources are mainly for teachers but may also be beneficial in helping students get familiar with the GHSGT exams.

The “Content Descriptions” page on the Georgia Department of Education website has links to detailed outlines of the topics covered on each graduation test. Go through these to get an idea of what you need to be studying and reviewing in your school textbooks to adequately get ready for these graduation tests.

Equally important are the GHSGT student guides. In addition to describing the content of the exams, the student guides have GHSGT practice questions and released test questions from previous administrations of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests.

Because there are different versions of these tests, make sure you find out from your school the exact tests that you are going to have to take. However, it is still a good idea to study all of the material provided by the Georgia Department of Education to increase your chances of passing and getting your high school diploma in Georgia.
