A: you could have an abscess in the tooth itself which would cause you to swell the denstist can do an xray and determine if its abscessed again. most dentist if comes to it will try to save the tooth (root canal)
Gingivitis? Sore gums from popcorn?
Q: I probably dont brush my teeth as often as I should. When I do I usually get a little bleeding and redness around the base of my teeth. Usually if I start brushing much more often it eventually goes away.Anyway, I ate some popcorn last night and got a piece stuck in my gum. I got it out with my tongue, but today it feels a bit red, inflamed and tender where the popcorn was. It doesn’t hurt that bad, but I am a hypochondriac and worry. Is this gingivitis or a more serious infection? Do I need to go to the doctor (I have my teeth cleaned regularily) or will brushing and using Listerine take care of it on its own? How do you tell the difference between gingivitis and something more serious like an abscess?
A: From what you described, it sounds like you have gingivitis. Be careful and take good care of your because it might turn into gum disease. Go to your dentist and get your teeth checked and they will tell you if you might need to get scaling/root planing. If your gingivitis is mild, it will go away on its on by brushing and flossing your teeth daily. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water will also help.

Do I need to go to the doctor (I have my teeth cleaned regularily and the dentist just mentions that I need to brush more and that is why my gums bleed but has never really mentioned periodontis or anything) or will brushing and using Listerine take care of it on its own? How do you tell the difference between gingivitis and something more serious like an abscess?
A: yikes. you need to take better care of your teeth. they are the only set you ever get! has your dentist ever mentioned periodontisis? bad spelling, im sure. I’m glad to see you at least go see him regularily thats a plus.!I’d use that brush a bit more often, use the listerine, and floss. Also, if i have a spot like that that’s really bugging me, use some hydrogen peroxide and swish good, spit and rinse out really really well. repeat it if you have too. I have one of the Oral B brushes that takes batteries, it rocks. I picked that one, becuase the head is really small and i can fit it behind my back teeth.Being as you are a hypochondriac, you should take better care of your teeth and gums. bad dental can lead to lots and lots of other medical problems!
