Dr. Oz – “Adult ADHD”

“Is adult ADHD ruining your marriage?” questioned Dr. Oz during his show about ADHD in adults. According to Dr. Oz, up to 75% of adults with ADHD do not realize they have the condition which is normally associated with children. However, their lives are negatively affected because ADHD affects the ability to function properly in daily life.

Adults with ADHD are prone to have problems at work, difficulty focusing, and often forget to pay bills. They may also display impulsive behaviors that affect personal and work relationships. Dr. Oz estimates that 9 million people have ADHD. The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but both genetics and neurology are contributing factors.

Dr. Oz stated that adults with ADHD are twice as likely to get divorced as the general population. For many people having a spouse with ADHD is like having to deal with another child. They must constantly repeat themselves and remind the spouse of his or her obligations. Moreover, the partner with ADHD is often frustrated with being treated like a child. Dr. Oz recommends that spouses make a habit of writing things down for their partners with ADHD. In addition, he believes it is a good idea to meet with a doctor experienced in treating adult ADHD.

There are some additional steps that make it easier for adults with ADHD to focus. Dr. Oz stated that drinking a cup of coffee helps with concentration. He also recommended reducing the noise levels in the environment, even if that means wearing noise reduction earphones or headphones.
