How to Turn a Glass Window into a Frosted Window

Windows represent a large part of the exterior of your home and drapes and blinds can give a warming effect. However, where privacy is an issue, frosted windows are essential. A bathroom is a prime example of this where a window can let in enough light but prevent anybody from being able to look inside. Although this type of frost window does not provide complete privacy, any object inside will be blurred and unrecognizable.

The frosting of a plain glass window is a simple process but the right materials have to be used. These materials include masking tape, a razor knife, paper, a soft cloth, vinegar, window cleaner and frosting spray. With all the materials in place, the frosting can take place.

The window to be frosted should at first be covered with a sheet of plain paper. When the paper is smooth it should be taped to the window with the masking tape.

Using a pencil, the required design should be drawn on the paper; it is advisable to start with a simple design when beginning as this will be a stencil of the finished design on the window.

When this has been completed, the paper should then be removed and placed on a flat surface, now the outline of the design should be cut out with the razor knife. Care should be taken with this process as this will be the stencil for the design on your frosted window.

The window in question should then be cleaned with vinegar by using a lint free cloth. The more thorough the window is cleaned, the more effective the frosting will be.

When the window is perfectly clean, the stencil should be taped in position. Then by using the frosting spray your required design can be made. The thickness of the spray is determined by the distance from the window that you spray from, the further away the lighter the effect. Experimenting with different colors can enhance the appearance but one layer of frosting should be dry before adding another.

It is advisable to wait until the frosting is completely dry before removing the stencil. But the effect that the frosted window will give your home will be well worth the wait.
