Review: Applebee’s Veggie Patch Pizza

My wife’s birthday was earlier this week and, since I had a gift card to Applebee’s, we decided to go there for a birthday dinner before stopping at my parents’ house for cake.

We ordered our entrees and, realizing we would still have some money leftover on our gift card, I decided to order an appetizer too (this was, in part, because I wanted to have something leftover for a snack later that evening). I wanted something somewhat different so, after glancing over our usual appetizers, I decided to give their Veggie Patch Pizza a try.

When I ordered this, I had no idea what it was. However, after trying it, I can honestly say it is something I would order again.

The Veggie Patch Pizza consists of mushrooms, spinach, artichoke hearts and cheese on a paper-thin crust. My first concern when I ordered this pizza was there would be too much and we wouldn’t have enough room leftover for our main entrees. However, that wasn’t the case. The crust was thin (and crispy) enough where it didn’t fill us up completely and the vegetables contributed to this being a light snack before our meal. Had it just been one person, it might have been too much. But, when shared, it is the perfect appetizer when it comes to quantity.

I was also very impressed with the taste. I’m not normally a person who orders pizza with just vegetables and was a bit concerned it would be too much like eating a salad (in which case, I would have been better off just ordering a salad). However, the cheese had a good flavor to it and worked well with the mix of vegetables. I won’t go as far as to say it was the best tasting pizza I have ever had but it was decent enough.

My only real complaint about this pizza was the crust. As I mentioned, the thin crust did keep it from being too filling (which is why I was OK with thin crust this time around even though I don’t normally enjoy it). However, the crust was too thin when it came to larger slices and would collapse when you picked the pizza up; making it a little difficult to eat it.

Overall though, I do think this is a menu item that is worth trying if you haven’t already. As I said before, I would definitely order it again.
