With melatonin the lowest dose that works is the best dose. For most people one milligram is plenty.
melatonin is a chemical in the body that is higher at night, lower in the morning, so the thinking is: more melatonin at night can help you sleep. that can be true, but not for all people, because melatonin does rise and fall throughout the day. try the half pill daily if you want for a week or so, then a full pill (3mg) for a week. if you still aren’t pleased i doubt that melatonin will work for you. good luck. you can also try regular sleeping/waking habits and sitting in bed reading about a half hour befoe bedtime to let the body calm down.
Only a tiny amount of melatonin is needed. Research shows that 0.3 to 1mg is sufficient to help with sleep. More can actually have the effect of keeping you awake as it stops your bodies production causing you to wake up.Most tablets come in 3mg dose. Best to cut it in half or even 1/3rd.Also make sure you get melatonin that has been tested by HPLC, otherwise you may not be getting what you think you are getting.
The owner of the health food store that I go to told me less is more as well. He said start at 1 mg then move up. I have horrible time going to sleep and could literally stay up all night if not for melatonin and I take 5 mgs and that knocks me out pretty quickly, but for others it may not.
