Off Road Vehicle Trails for ATV Riding in Missouri State Parks

Missouri has numerous state parks in which to enjoy many activities, however for ATV riders there are only two state parks in Missouri that have off-road vehicle (ORV) trails. One trail is located in Boone County, in the city of Columbia and the other trail is located in St. Francois County in the town of Park Hills.

This ORV trail is 5.25 miles long and is open to motorcycles and ATV’s. This dirt trail begins at the campground trail, runs to the motocross track, continues on to the staging area and ends at the park office. Riders of all skill levels can follow the signs along the trail to reach specific designations. Wooded landscapes, several lakes and huge, 20 to 30 feet high mounds can be viewed along the trail. Riders should use caution when approaching steep grades, downed vegetation, mud and slippery surfaces along the trail. The park staff maintains this trail; however the remaining trails in the open riding area are not maintained by the park department. Riding permits cost $5.00 a day, per vehicle and are available at the park offce.

This ORV riding area is made up of 2,000 acres. Crushed limestone, better known as sand flats, makes up 800 of these acres. The remaining acreage consists of woody hillsides with numerous trails. Along with ATV’s, it is not uncommon to see jacked up four-wheel drive vehicles, dune buggies, side by side vehicles and even snowmobiles in the sand flats. Only ATV’s, side by sides and motorcycles are allowed run the trails. Most of the trails have a numbering system for identification purposes and the trails have various difficulty levels. Amenities at the trailhead include loading ramps, an ORV rinse station, outdoor showers, toilets, picnic tables, barbecue grills and three picnic shelters. Riding permits cost $5.00 per day and are available at the park office.
