Back in the ‘olden days’ when I was a young person a bowling alley was the last place I wanted to be seen. They were not considered hip by any stretch of the imagination. We hung out at the skating rink and the movie theaters. Fast-forward 30 years and you will find that In the new millennium bowling alleys have made a comeback and reinvented themselves as a hip place for teens and tweens to congregate as well as youngsters, seniors and everyone in between.
Vestavia Bowl is located in the upscale but friendly city of Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. A remnant of decades gone past it sat in a state of dormancy for many years catering to a small patronage of regulars who came there to bowl and visit the Lounge inside the building. The building looked out-dated and drab and I personally would not take my young daughter there because it appeared ‘sleazy’ to me and I feared the atmosphere would not be appropriate for her. We would drive much farther to another bowling alley that was more modern and featured more of a youth-oriented atmosphere.
Approximately ten years ago Vestavia Bowl was completely remodeled and reinvented to attract the desirable demographic which included everyone from young children through senior citizens but most importantly the tweens and teens. The building went from looking drab and dull to slick and attractive. Bright lights and neon colors graced the now two-story building. Inside the bowling alley underwent a complete transformation.
Open seven days a week, Vestavia Bowl offers a wide variety of bowling activities ranging from open bowling to leagues and tournaments. The facility also offers a full gameroom, lounge and snack bar as well as it’s own Pro Shop.
While the Cosmic Bowling is a favorite event for the tweens and teens and my now 20 year old daughter and her friends (offered on select weekend nights) Vestavia Bowl also offers many activities that cater to local youth. A participant in Kids Bowl Free the facility also provides materials to local schools free of charge for a fun and exciting physical education program called In-School Bowling and hosts school field trips by advance reservation.
