Canary scratching at night…Mites?
Q: Hi,I have a rare belgian hunchback canary who (since I brought him home) has been itching a lot at night. he scratches a lot. I covered the cage with a white pillowcase to see if i could catch the red mites in the morning but i didn’t see anything. Do you think he has mites? Should I hang an 8-1 mite bird protector from the cage ? Should I spray him with Scalex?
A: yes spray with scalex, also try tape around the cage its better to catch the mites, always keep the cage perches food and water cups clean.this is an amazing site for canary owners www.robirda.com . good luck !
How do I cure mites?????HELP PLEASE?
Q: First of all we have a dog, then we got a bunny and after a month or so after we got it, I guess it started itching and all that stuff, it could of had mites or fleas I dont remember but now our dog has it and so does my parent! My parent says she can feel the mites jumping on her and stuff and she gets all these rashes! And she cleans the whole house and cleans the dog. So a couple weeks ago or like a week ago we got rid of the bunny, the bunny probably got it from the store we got it from, it also could of been bird mites because there were birds flying all over and there were bunnys and rats. Well anyways so my parent is taking care of the cars, the sofas and all that, but when she washes the dog she gets recontaminated! So we have to get rid of the dog and we had the dog for a REALLY REALLY REALLY long time and we love that dog so much but I heard that mites take longer to get rid of on the dog or they wont go away on the dog or animal. And dont say take her to the vet because first of all we already know what the problem is and we dont want to waste almost up to 1,000 dollars on medicine and also the medicine can be very poisonous for the dog and it might not even cure it!!! Just please is that anything that we can do?? Is there anything that we can do to stop it because we did alot of stuff! I wish we never bought that bunny =( My parent always crys because shes scared and she doesnt want anybody to catch it and I feel so bad, I just dont know how she gets rashes?? I got a few bites like a month or like 3 weeks ago. Do you think we should get rid of the dog because I dont know what they are gonna do to it = ( Im scared and really sad. Its ok if we give her away I just want her to be safe and healthy and have a good home ;(. Thanks for reading im sorry it was a lot.
A: The dog will have to see the vet…it could be scabies. This type of mite cannot live long on humans but does create little bites that heal up after a few days. On a dog…they thrive! Take the dog to the vet!!! You cannot home cure this kind of infestation.
FOOT PROBLEM with one of my LOVEBIRDS?
Q: hi i got a pair of lovebirds almost a month ago. They looked and seemed happy and healthy. a couple of days after i got them, one of them had something wrong with its foot. It seemed to be in pain, i could tell because it kept squinting its eyes ( it tried to hide this from me =S ) and lifting its foot under its wing, well when i took a closer look its nail had come of and a little bit was left. I phoned up the aviary where i got them from and they said they’d be happy for me to bring it back and they’d ” treat ” it and i could SWAP it. at this point i was really upset because i had wanted birds for years and id already got attached to them and there was no way i was going to swap one of these birds when it was clearly very sweet and close with the other bird. Anyway i re-dialled the aviary and asked if they could look at the bird for me because when they said “treat” i assumed they would kill it. When i took my bird in they said there was nothing wrong with it. WHEN THERE CLEARLY WAS! there was blood from my birds foot on the perches. i suppose my birds foot could have got caught on something but i don’t think that’s the reason. She ( i think ) is eating and drinking fine although ive had to push a perch right next to the feeding cups so she can get to them. The foot started getting better ( she looked in less pain and was acting like a happy little bird around the cage ). Well i noticed she has a WHOLE nail missing on the other foot! apart from that, that foot is fine. on the painful foot i noticed it is now pointing slightly upwards ( and the nails arn’t overgrown or anything ). well this nail has started bleeding, not alot, but enough she has got it on the perches and managed to get it across her chest. its now hurting again. My other bird seems fine and although not tame he’s quite happy once i get him out to eat from my hand. his feet look in perfect condition and nails are the right size. The other birds foot ( with the bad toes ) seems quite dry? i know they have scaly feet but they dont seem quite right. shes a pastel blue peach faced lovebird so her feet are much darker so i can see they are a bit white looking ( looks a little dry ) in places.Ive heard of mites that can cause foot problems ( is this true ). although there doesnt seem to be any itching and the other bird im sure would have caught them by now. I would have taken the birds to the vet the first time but they never seem to be open when we call and are quite far from us. the bird with the bad foot bites very hard aswell, whilst the other one bites but you are only aware its doing this if your looking at it =S. If i managed to take it out of the cage is there anything i could put on its foot to help?please i hope someone has the answer! thank you!
A: There are a number of things that could have happened to your birds claw ,it could have been pecked by it’s mate, caught it on the cage wire and lost it’s claw,To treat your bird you can spray it’s claw with a dilute solution of a mild Antiseptic (not disinfectant)such as T.C.P. Or take it gently and put it ‘s foot in the solution, if your birds have a bath you can put it in there, The solution should be 2 teaspoons or 10 mls to a pint of warm water.Mites DO NOT cause birds to loose their claws.Do you feed your bird Veg. such as Broccoli, Kale, Sweet Corn cob,(not lettuce)fruit such as Apple , Pear, Grapes (not Avacado)Dandelion Leaves are an excellent tonic . Cuttle bone , Mineral block. All these will keep your bird in good health.By what you are saying your birds are not young as their feet should not be heavily scaled and as dry as you say.but then again it could be their diet.Last but not least ,check the cage and see if there are any wires loose or that could have caused the problem
