Making a Difference in South Carolina

Being a volunteer can be a rewarding experience for people of all ages. Right now in the Newberry and Union areas of SC there are many opportunities available. You will help out those in need and keep your skills of your trade sharpened.

The Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County, Inc. is seeking volunteers. This clinic helps all who are in need of medical attention, whether they can pay for their services or not. The clinic is located at 2568 Kinard Street in Newberry, SC directly across the street from the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Stop by the office during regular business hours for more information or call 803-276-6665. The hours at the clinic are Monday and Friday 9:30 AM – noon; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM and closed on Saturday and Sunday. The free clinic is staffed fully by volunteers of doctors, nurses, dentists and other support personnel. You can also download volunteer forms in Word or PDF format on the clinic’s website.

The Newberry County Volunteer Guardian ad Litem Program is also seeking volunteers. The GAL program is the voice for abused, neglected or abandoned children. As a guardian ad litem you will help abused children find safe, permanent, loving homes where they can thrive. You will also help determine if the child should be placed back in the home, if the child should be placed in foster care or if the child should be placed for adoption. No special skills are needed, just a loving and nurturing nature but you will need to be able to pass background and reference checks. Volunteers must be able to volunteer 4 to 6 hours of their time per month. Volunteers will also have to complete a free 30 hour training program. The Union County, SC chapter of Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to support their ongoing efforts of improving the lives of those less fortunate for one reason or another. As of this year, Habitat for Humanity has built over 400,000 affordable homes for more than 2 million people worldwide.
