Tuxedo Tie Options

A tuxedo is a type of formal menswear that includes specific components such as a coat, shirt and trousers. It also has accessories such as vests, cummerbunds and a bow tie. Several options for tuxedo ties are available, including color and style.

Color

Black is the most common color for a tuxedo tie, while white ties are reserved for the most formal occasions. Casual events may allow a tuxedo tie to have other colors and patterns. Tuxedo ties can be purchased as part of a set that includes a cummerbund and or vest. They are also available as separate items.

Styles

Tuxedo bow ties are available in several styles, with the primary difference being the spread of the wings. A butterfly bow tie has a wide spread and is so-named for its resemblance to a butterfly. This is the traditional style of tuxedo tie. A batwing bow tie is narrower and has a vertical spread that is half that of a butterfly bow tie. This type of bow tie is used for less formal occasions. Some modern tuxedo ties have pointed ends that are used for formal events.

Tying Method

Traditional tuxedo ties, also known as self-tied bows, must be tied by the wearer. The length of the tie is generally small, medium and large. A self-tied bow may also have an adjustable length. Pre-tied bows have a clip behind them that attaches to the collar. They are much easier to put on than a self-tied bow, although clip-on ties are unsuitable for formal occasions.
