Q: Okay. So, i’m 18 and my boyfriend and I have been sexually active for the past 8 months. Here’s the bad part about it…we haven’t been using any method nor form of protection. We’re actually pretty reckless when it comes to this, I know. I know it’s really bad…we just do our thing…we don’t even record dates that are high risks to get pregnant on either. I went in first, the physician went through everything and got to the main question “Would you like to be put onto birth control pills?” and I answered yes. She asked me “What pharmacy would you like to pick up your pills?” or something similar to that and I told her my local CVS. She agreed and left. I finished my physical with 4 shots and went back out to pick up a couple of papers and meet my dad. The only papers I got were the ones stating what type of shots I got. Nothing more. No presrciption. My dad later met up with me in the lobby and I started feeling awkward and confused about the prescription. I told him “my physician wrote me a prescription and I didn’t get it…” and he acted like I didn’t hear him and didn’t answer. So, I said it again and he said “a prescription…?” and I said yeah. He didn’t ask anything after that…not “what kind?” or “for what?”. I then asked him “Are they giving us any more papers once -my brother- comes out or are we going to talk to the doctors again??” and he didn’t answer…just acted like he didn’t hear me. My brother came out and my dad got up and said “okay! let’s go!” like I never told him about my prescription I needed. I don’t want to bring it up with him because it would just make my household an awkward place and he doesn’t think i’m sexually active…this subject is just not something to talk about with mom or dad and the door of this subject will never be opened with them. I have talked to my older cousin (23) who does live with me and know about this, though. She’s willing to take me up and get my pills but…i’m still stuck on this prescription deal.That’s when I started thinking that maybe my physician told him and asked him for his permission to prescribe me the pills and he said no? Or what? And if so, is she allowed to do that since I am 18? Or did she fax or send the prescription to CVS for me to just go in, show my ID and pick up? I am really confused and I really want to go on these pills! Please help.

A: Call the pharmacy and ask if they have a prescription waiting for you. If they don’t then call the dr’s office and tell the nurse that you never got the prescription the dr wrote and ask to have it called into your pharmacy. No big deal

A: Yes she likely called in the order to the pharmacy you spoke about. But be aware they can run about $20-$30 per month so if you have an insurance card you should show it when you go. Just tell the pharmacist that your Dr called in a prescription for you and you would like to get it. If they say that they don’t have any call in for you tell them it must be a mistake and have them call your Dr, if she forgot then it’s likely this will remind her and she will OK the prescription,

Q: I need health insurance coverage…. especially for my prescription, I pay about $200.00 monthly on my medication, Effexor, Birth Control, Acne Cream. I need help on what type of coverage I need… I don’t want to pay $200.00 for it and then have to pay someother fee for prescriptions, I would rather pay the $200.00 for my prescriptions & not have insurance….. A: Since you are taking Effexor you will have a hard time getting an insurance plan that will cover you. Most plans, if they accept you, will put a rider on the depression and probably the acne. A rider means they won’t cover the condition or anything resulting from the condition (such as medication) for a period of time. This period could be from one year to permanent. You should visit a local independent agent who can search the plans to see what your options are. They don’t charge any extra for the service. Don’t try to do this over the internet because you won’t know if a company will decline, rider, or increase the premium until you apply and go through the underwriting process.
