does this sound like i’m in early stages of labour to you?
Q: HiI’m 41 weeks + 3 days pregnant.On Thursday morning i had a sweep, Friday morning i had show.Last night i kept waking up with stomach cramps and pains, i just thought i might have had a bad tummy (i was half asleep), this morning when i got up i had slight diarrhoea, with more show and blood.My cramps continued and i started timing them, they were irregular but roughly every 7 mins.They feel like a wave of pain, and tightening just below my bump.i rang the maternity unit and she said it sounded like it could be “the real thing” but alot of women suffer tightenings after a sweep.Which has made me doubt everything!She told us to go for walks, when i walk my contractions become very regular, but if it stop they become irregular.The quickest they have been is every 5 minsThing is i can’t walk constantly all day! But then i don’t want the contractions to go away and for this to be a false start!Does this sound like first stage of labour to you? can i be hopeful or could it be nothing?What can i do to encourage things to progress?Please don’t tell me to go straight to hospital, it isn’t how it works here in england, you are encouraged to stay at home until you are desperate lol.Thnaks
A: It does sound like the start. People usually get diarrhoea 24-48 hours before birth. instead of walking try bouncing up and down, gently. Best thing for this is a birthing/exercises ball. If you don’t have one sit on the edge of a sofa or bed, after each contraction bounce gently, for about 1 min or as long as you can. I can’t remember the medical terms for it, but the contractions cause the baby’s head to push against a gland releasing hormones, which bring on the next contraction. If you bounce just after a contraction you will be carrying on the cycle of the baby’s head pushing on the gland, so more hormones are released and contractions become more regular.Try it, it really does work.
