How do psychological theories contribute to our understanding of criminal behavior?
Q: This a criminology class that I am taking. This is a study guide question that might appear in the test.
A: If all I have is the criminal’s behavior, I can’t predict crime, I can only react to it. If I know that certain people have a proclivity to starting fires and cruelty to animals, I know they may be more likely to hurt people, and I can supervise them more closely. If I know that people who’ve been abandoned are more prone to rage, then when I question a suspect about a brutal beating, I can ask them about their family history and expect them to respond as though threatened, even if I ask nicely. But that bit of information comes out of a psychological theory known as object relations, that when people have unresolved anger with abusive people in their past, they’ll treat people in their present as if they are those people from their past, irrationally. Without a psychological theory, I would not be able to connect the dots and explain their behavior until I had experienced it on my own.
