A: I think honesty is appropriate for this scenario.It really depends on the scenario: terminal cancer vs broken finger, adult vs kid, drama queen vs stoic person.I have counselling experience and many times when people ask this question they are looking for someone to actually share their concerns with rather than an actual yes or no answer.Try responding with an open ended question like:”Are you thinking you might die?” or “what is on your mind” or “i am not sure but would you like to have a chat about it?”Nurses are rarely prepared how to deal with these scenarios but we are frequently in them. I think the worst thing you can do is dismis them as being silly or make their concerns seem trivial with quotes like:”not on my shift” or “not today” or”ummm” (followed by a fake phone call)- i once saw a junior doctor do this!I you don’t know the answer then help the patient discuss there concerns and fears. 9/10 times the patient has already made up their mind before they ask anyone this question and are seeking affirmation that there concerns are valid.I hope this helps,Chris- Registered Nurse
