Q: Because I had atypical symptoms for one week (very mild pain in midsection, normal blood work, no fever or pain) doctors were unable to diagnose appendicitis. It was only after CAT scan that they were able to see the appendix at the back of the bladder. It was burst and an abcsess had been formed. Due to its hight risk, Doctors decided not to operate, instead I was prescribed IV antibiotics (2days) followed by 2 week oral antibiotics. My question is: how long is the recovery time for a case like this? I haven’t been able to find any information for such a case. It’s been two weeks and pain is gone, gas in abdomen has dramatically decreased but I can still see some inflamation in low right abdomen (specially in the morning when I wake up). Any ideas? I have appointment next week with specialist.

A: I had a very similar experience. My appendix ruptured and formed an abcess about 1.5 months ago. I also was not diagnosed until after a CAT scan, and I still have my appendix. I was on IV antibiotics for 4 days, and then orally for 7. I had to go back on antibiotics after two weeks off, since my abdominal pain from the abcess returned. I have been off antibiotics now for one week. My pain is finally gone, however I still have some mild gastrointestinal symptoms, and my appetite still comes and goes. My doctor told me that over a month of recovery was to be expected. She indicated that recovery time is much faster with appendectomy than when you keep the appendix. The abcess takes quite a while to clear up in cases like ours where it was not possible to drain the abcess. I hope this helps! Hang in there, it does get better bit by bit.

Again he gave me amoxicillin – 5 days’ worth. I have been taking it since Monday morning but am still in agony.
