What can I do about my Cavalier’s that won’t stop chewing their skin….?
Q: My Cavalier’s are constantly chewing and scratching their bodies. They chew their legs, butts, chests, pretty much everywhere! They are both rescues so I don’t have a history on their parents. Both were originally on Pedigree, then they started the chewing and scratching so I changed them over to a non-allergenic food (Salmon & Potato.) Their treats have no preservatives because I was giving them dried chicken strips and the itching got worse. Now I give them all natural treats – Salmon bits, Duck and potato wraps etc.. I put oil in their food every meal; supposed to help with skin and coat conditions. Their coats are a lot smoother and shinier, but they STILL scratch and chew. The groomer uses only non-allergenic shampoos, and the last time she said my female had a staph infection so she used medicated shampoo. They don’t have any fleas. These guys are SOOOO miserable and the female is losing hair on her rear end now, along with sores on legs that she chews constantly. HELP!!I am using Nature’s Balance food. It is an excellent brand and non-allergenic. I think the chicken is the biggest problem in their diet. I stopped giving them the chicken strips but I need to do more research on ingredients. My male has been to the vet for this before, but not my female. We are going to get to the vet this week for a skin scraping (just in case she has some demodex.) I thank everyone so much for their input, especially Nebit. I will follow the links you’ve provided and join the groups – thanks for the tips. I do try not to give people food to my dogs…but, those great big beautiful eyes!! My gosh! How do you resist! No, I have really been pretty good about it. It just dawned on me a few hours ago that I did give them both some of my milk yesterday. BIG mistake. Once again, thanks for the info! See you around!
A: this does sound like allergies. first, I would bring them to the vet to be absolutely sure there is no medical reason for the itching. Next I would try a different allergy diet. I have a basset with extreme food allergies and it took several diets to find the right fit. First we took her off grains, but the itching continued- it turns out she was allergic to the chicken in the new diet, so we finally switched her to a grain free, fish based diet which worked- I would reccomend finding a grain free, novel protein diet- Timberwolf makes some good ones to start. Also, be sure you read ALL of the ingredients on EVERYTHING your cavs get. It will do them no good if they are still getting the allergen any other way- this includes table scraps (which I find are very easy to forget, lol) It would be akin to a lactose intolerant person eliminating all dairy from breakfast, lunch and dinner, but still snacking in cheese and ice cream -it doesn’t work. The reason I point this out is because 1. people often forget and 2. many seemingly ok foods actually contain the allergens farther down the list- I have even seen fish based allergy diets which contain chicken livers halfway down the ingredient list!Be aware that it may take several months for an allergy diet to produce results. Also, not ALL allergies are food related. It is possible that they are allergic to grass, pollen, dust etc. Finally, it is possible that the itching is diet related, but that now the itching has become an ingrained behavior pattern. First, ask your vet to give them somthing to relieve the itching while you wait for results. Now that you KNOW they aren’t itchy, check to see if they still itch. Our basset for instance, greatly improved on a grain free, novel protein diet. She does still have seasonal allergies though (mostly in the summer) but they are milder, she also tends to itch when she is bored or left home alone. If they are still itching, gently correct the behavior and distract thier attention elsewhere- like a treat filled toy for instance. For an allergy diet I would reccomend going grain free. I would also reccomend choosing a very novel protein- not chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, or now that you’ve tried it, fish. If you can’t find a grain free food, avoid corn, rice, wheat and soy. www.petfooddirect.com is an excellent resource where you can find practically all brands on the market listed w/ ingredients, even if you don’t order therewww.dogfoodanalysis.com is a great site for looking up individual diets to see how they rank- anything 4 stars or higher is excellentSince you have Cavs (I do too!) you can afford to feed a high quality brand because they eat so little. You might also look at frozen diets- they are quite popular among cav people. I just picked up a bag of Nature’s Variety Frozen Venison Medallions that are, I believe, grain free 🙂 Finally, have you joined CavConn? Its a nice message community of Cav folks, many of whom have gone throgh the allergy thing as well, thats www.cavalierboard.comOh, and some yahoo groups with great Cav related allergy and diet info…..http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CAVALIERS/http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CavaliersNaturally/?yguid=120689404http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/K9Kitchen/?yguid=120689404Hope to see you around! 🙂 -Neb
