Americans Think They Look Just Marvelous

How good looking does the average American believe them self to be? According to a recent study done by Mandala research, it appears that most Americans feel they posses well above average looks. One in three of the research respondents rated themselves as 8, 9 or a 10, while more than half of Americans say their looks are worthy of at least a 7 rating on a scale of 1-10.

How do these same Americans look at others? The study showed that some Americans can be rather judgmental about the looks of others. Half of the people who responded said the people in their city are overweight and 36% felt their fellow urban citizes were superficial. Only 46% believe the women in their city are beautiful and only one in three said the men in their city were handsome. There were even 19% who claimed the people in their city had bad personal hygiene.

According to a 12/14/11 press release from LivingSocial, local trends expert Amy Wolf said “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, apparently, as long as the beholder is looking in a mirror at the time. When most Americans look at the people around them, however, they are less generous in their assessments.”

The study also provided data on the way people viewed appearance by geographic area. The cities in the United States rated as the most vain were Miami at the top followed by Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Los Angeles. The cities where people felt their looks weren’t impressive were Cleveland, which came in last, followed by Dallas, Detroit, Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul.

The most common cosmetic procedure that people knew someone who had received was breast implants followed by laser hair removal, Botox/disport, tummy tuck and nose job/rhinoplasty. The least was butt implants. The most common beauty activity was hair coloring/highlights followed by manicure/pedicure, massage and a visit to a spa. The least common was a spray tan.

The survey was conducted online with over 4,000 respondents.
