Q: Drama 🙂 Would like some tips on how to make yourself cry because I have to do a crying scene in a play. Thankyou!
A: I’m not as much into method acting… I don’t think it’s necessarily that important to make yourself feel the emotion, because feeling an emotion and expressing it are sometimes really different. I have to do a crying scene for the show I’m in now, and I practiced in the mirror, how my character’s face would look when she cries, and how her body would look. Then I tried different sobs and vocalizations. To me tears aren’t nearly as important as the facial expression and the motions and the vocalizations, because people will barely see if you’ve got tears if they’re past the first row.The funny thing is, once I figured out how I’d react, physically…. I started reacting emotionally too. Suddenly, the words of the other actor that makes me cry started stinging, for real, because I was so into the character. I was crying REAL tears because I was acting like my character, not like me, and the words that the other actor said hurt my character. So, that’s my personal advice. Instead of feeling the emotion to get the movements/action – try practicing the movements/action and the character-appropriate emotions will follow.
whats the best way to make yourself cry on stage?
Q: its been really difficult, my meyes arent sensetive and wont do it on command like some lucky people onions and stuff like that is pointless because u can smell it, the best ways that ive found so far are applting olbas oil on my fingers and rubbing it near my eyes during the performance which is really effective but then you wont stop and it can really hurt, the other is looking up for a period of time and not blinking but i need to do it naturally and that whole finding a really sad memory things is hard for me because i dont really have any HELP!!??
A: If you need to basically come onstage crying, try contact solution or eye drops. They will make you look like you are crying, and it is easy to stop. If the crying part comes in the middle of a scene, I can’t give much advice except make up a sad memory… sometimes it works, like act like someone just told you your best friend died and that should make you at least appear like you are crying. Keep in mind, on a stage people can’t really see tears; they know you are “crying” by your voice choking up and maybe your face turning a little red. It you practice doing that, and rubbing your eyes a little, you will look like you are crying without the tears. Hope this helps!
