What is the proper benching (bench press) technique?
Q: I’ve gone on a few different sites and I’ve got different ideas of what I am suppose to do. 1) I prefer not pulling my shoulder blades back before and during benching. Is this important?2) I normally don’t go past when my arms reach the horizontal but on the site I just went on it said to go to your chest. I tried this and it greatly reduced what I could lift. Do I have to do this?3) The site also said to put your hands a certain distance apart such that when you reach the bottom of your press, they are vertical. My cheap-o bench i bought has the dam barbell rest right in the place where I should put my hands. Is this important or can i bring the hands in a bit? Thanks heaps in advance 🙂 It’s greatly appreciated
A: Pulling your shoulders together will give you a stronger, firmer base with which to bench. It also allows the lats to come in to play when the bar is leaving your chest. If the bar fails within a few inches of your chest, your lats are to blame. If the bar isn’t hitting your chest, you aren’t benching. With the arms only going horizontal, you are working more of the triceps and the lockout part of the lift. The reason you can’t do as much weight is because it is harder to do when it is done to the correct depth.Hand width is up to you. Most go at least a little wider than shoulder width. The closer in you have your hands, the more it becomes atricepsp exercise, the wider you go it involves the chest and lats a bit more. The bench isn’t just a chest workout, its mostly triceps, with chest, lats and front delts as well.
Is it common for someone to be able to bench press 535 pounds without using steroids?
Q: A friend of mine can bench press 535 pounds and he claims he doesn’t use steroids. Meanwhile I am still struggling to reach 300. Is it normal for someone who doesn’t use steroids to be able to bench press 535? Or do you think he’s lying about using steroids? I’ve been lifting weights for over a year, and I’m still not quite to 300. I don’t go to a gym, so I don’t see how much other people are benching. But 535 seems like a lot to me.
A: I would be interested to know if you’ve seen him do it or he’s just told you he can. I’d also like to know if he’s doing that unassisted or if someone’s helping him the whole way.I’m not saying he can’t but as far as what people lift I only believe it when I see it. It’s possible to lift those numbers and more but we’re talking about powerlifters here. The average guy will never hit that kind of weight without some sort of chemical help.I used to hit numbers like that but after a layoff I’m getting up to about 440.So no, it’s not common.
What is the fastest/most effective way to increase the amount I can bench press/leg press?
Q: I’m looking to increase my maximum Bench Press weight as well as my maximum Leg press. This is to get into the State Highway Patrol. I’ll need to put up one rep of each. Will I want to do a few reps of a lot of weight or a lot of reps of a lower weight? (I’m assuming I’ll want few reps of more weight)Should I stick to doing as many reps as I can of just the bench press and leg press?Or are there other exercises that I should mix in that would help out in those two ‘events’?I guess I said it best in my first question: “what is the fastest/most effective way to increase the amount I can lift in each?”Also, I’ll need to do as many pushups and sit-ups in a minute as i can possibly do.Any tips on either of these besides just working my tail off? Will I want to stick to minute long sessions of pushups and sit-ups, or will I want to focus on getting as many in per day as I can using smaller sets?Hopefully everybody else understands what I’m trying to say. And thanks a lot for any input at all.
A: Try NO Xlode. You will be able to lift more while you work out. Its at GNC or wherever you have a health store. Do pyramids. 10,8,6 reps and keep increasing the weight. Do pushups on your bench days and do them last until you can’t go anymore. Then on an off day when you feel good, like once or twice a week, do pushups for a minute and see how many and try to increase everytime. GOOD LUCK.-DAVE
