- Q: I am 23 years old, and have smoked since the age of 14. I have quit smoking long enough that I am convinced that I am an ex-smoker. I am not terribly over weight, just out of shape, I have fine nutrition habits, but while trying to get more exercise, i found i get winded after only 3 minutes of jogging. What routine can I use to help gradually increase my endurance, and get back into shape?
- A: The treadmill is probably not the best way to try and get exercise. I have chronic asthma and I live with smokers so I found myself easily winded when I started first working out on the treadmill. Instead of using a treadmill and running, I use an elliptical and set my own resistance and I go my own speed. I know you can do that on a treadmill also, but the difference is that your whole body is pounding on the machine and that is a lot of weight to be hauling. The elliptical allows you to keep moving without using your body weight as resistance, get my gist? Just start slowly at about 15-17 resistance and about 20 minutes and work your way up. I’ve dropped almost 20 pounds just using the elliptical and strength training.Good luck! I hope I could help some 🙂
